A Little Irmo History

Irmo's history goes back much further than its modern suburban appearance might suggest. The area is part of the historic Dutch Fork, a region settled beginning in the 1700s by immigrants, particularly from Germany and Switzerland. Agriculture played an important role in the area's early development. The arrival of the railroad helped transform the community. Irmo was incorporated on December 24, 1890, around a railroad depot. The railroad provided a transportation and economic connection that helped the small community grow.

So, where did the name "Irmo" come from?

Here's one of Irmo's best-known pieces of trivia. The name Irmo is generally credited to a combination of the surnames of two officers associated with the Columbia, Newberry and Laurens Railroad: C. J. Iredell and H. C. Moseley. The railroad selected the area as a stop and refueling station for steam locomotives. What started as a small railroad community eventually developed into the town we know today. The Railroad Helped Put Irmo on the Map. When Irmo was first incorporated, the town covered only about one square mile surrounding the railroad depot.

The railroad became an important part of the local economy, giving farmers and businesses better access to transportation and markets. But another major development would have an even greater impact on the area's future: Lake Murray.

Lake Murray: One of Irmo's Biggest Attractions
It's difficult to talk about Irmo without talking about Lake Murray. Built between 1927 and 1930 as a hydroelectric reservoir, Lake Murray transformed the region. The project brought thousands of workers to the area during construction and ultimately helped establish the lake as an important part of the Midlands. Today, Lake Murray covers nearly 48,600 acres and has approximately 620 miles of shoreline, stretching across Lexington, Newberry, Richland, and Saluda counties.

For Irmo residents, the lake means easy access to:

- Boating
- Fishing
- Kayaking and paddleboarding
- Swimming
- Waterfront dining- Sunset cruises
- Scenic walks and outdoor recreation
- Marinas and boat launches
- Some of the best sunsets in the Midlands

The Lake Murray Dam is another popular local destination, offering spectacular views and opportunities for walking, fishing, and enjoying the outdoors. Lake life is one of the biggest reasons people choose to call the Irmo area home.
