A Little Irmo History

Irmo's history goes back much further than its modern suburban appearance might suggest.

The area is part of the historic Dutch Fork, a region settled beginning in the 1700s by immigrants, particularly Germans and Swiss. Agriculture played an important role in the area's early development, and the region remained largely rural for generations.

The arrival of the railroad helped change that.

Irmo was incorporated on December 24, 1890, around a new railroad depot. The Columbia, Newberry, and Laurens Railroad selected the area as a stop and refueling station for steam locomotives, helping establish Irmo as a small but important transportation point.

So, Where Did the Name "Irmo" Come From?

One of Irmo's most interesting pieces of local history is the story behind its name.

The name Irmo is generally credited to a combination of the surnames of two officers associated with the Columbia, Newberry, and Laurens Railroad: C. J. Iredell and H. C. Moseley.

The railroad depot helped attract businesses and residents to the area, and what began as a small railroad community eventually developed into the town we know today.

When Irmo was first incorporated, the town extended only about one-half mile in each direction from the railroad depot.

Over time, the railroad became an important part of the local economy, connecting farmers and businesses to transportation and markets.

But another major development would eventually have an even greater impact on Irmo and the surrounding Midlands: Lake Murray.

It's difficult to talk about Irmo without mentioning Lake Murray, but the lake is just one part of what makes the area appealing.

Construction of Lake Murray began in the late 1920s as part of a hydroelectric power project. The project brought thousands of workers to the region and transformed the surrounding area. Today, Lake Murray is one of the Midlands' most recognizable recreational destinations.

The lake covers approximately 48,579 acres and has about 620 miles of shoreline, spanning portions of Lexington, Newberry, Richland, and Saluda counties.

Much of Irmo is served by Lexington-Richland School District Five, commonly known as District Five. The district encompasses approximately 196 square miles across portions of Lexington and Richland counties and includes the Irmo and Dutch Fork attendance areas, as well as Chapin.

District Five implemented zoning changes for the 2026–2027 school year, making it especially important to check the current zone for any property you're considering.

The Irmo Okra Strut

Perhaps Irmo's most recognizable tradition is the Irmo Okra Strut.

And if you've ever wondered why a South Carolina town has a festival dedicated to okra, there's an interesting story behind that too.

A local radio personality helped create a fictional story about the "ancient Irmese" and their legendary okra crop, giving the festival its memorable name.

Today, the Okra Strut is one of the community's signature events and a great example of the personality that makes Irmo unique.
