Known for its family-friendly atmosphere, thriving businesses, and rich history, Irmo continues to grow while maintaining the charm that makes it a beloved place to live, work, and play.

A Town Rooted in History

Irmo’s origin traces back to the railroad era. Once a stop along the Columbia, Newberry, and Laurens Railroad, the town officially became incorporated on December 24, 1890. Its name is a combination of two railroad figures, Mr. Iredell and Mr. Moseley. For many years, Irmo was a peaceful rural community until the development boom of the 1960’s and 70’s, which brought subdivisions, commercial growth, and an influx of new residents. By the late 1970’s, Irmo had transformed into the bustling suburban town it is today.
