Irmo’s origin traces back to the railroad era. Once a stop along the Columbia, Newberry, and Laurens Railroad, the town officially became incorporated on December 24, 1890. Its name is a combination of two railroad figures, Mr. Iredell and Mr. Moseley. For many years, Irmo was a peaceful rural community until the development boom of the 1960’s and 70’s, which brought subdivisions, commercial growth, and an influx of new residents. By the late 1970’s, Irmo had transformed into the bustling suburban town it is today.

Irmo provides entertainment and things to do for all ages. Irmo Community Park serves as a local gathering spot with playgrounds, walking trails, and green spaces. Nearby, Saluda Shoals Park offers kayaking, biking, and scenic riverfront views. Kids love Leo’s Landing, and inclusive playground that encourages imaginative play for children of all abilities. You can also enjoy Saluda Shoals annual Holiday Lights during the holidays. The town shines during the annual Okra Strut Festival, a fun-filled celebration featuring a parade, live music, food vendors, and of course, plenty of okra!

Irmo High School is currently expanding and a new wing for the school is underway, further enhancing the town’s commitment to academic excellence. Irmo is home to Midlands Technical College Harbison that offers a wide variety of schooling for all.
